The Good Lorry Code and the Good Van Code are industry's own codes of good practice. With the distinctive Well Driven? logo, it shows the public that you are a caring and responsible company.

It also brings a wide range of management and financial benefits. A professional image and a responsible attitude go hand in hand with a successful business.

Isn't it time your company gave Well Driven? the thumbs up?

 Thumbs Up for SAFETY
The commitment to the highest operational and driving standards required by the code results in better driving and fewer accidents. The public will be reassured that your company, as a member of the code, not only places safety and high standards at the top of your priorities, but also cares enough to respond properly to their worries.

 Thumbs Up for SUCCESS
Your improved company image will give your business added value and win new custom. Well Driven? has become the marque of excellence that transport buyers are now seeking from their hauliers. When you sign up, you will be associating with the best, as the scheme's growing list of members proves.

 Thumbs Up for IMAGE
By joining Well Driven?, subscribers commit to the highest operational and environmental standards showing that they are professional and enhancing industry image. Direct feedback provided by the free phone hotline means operators can target road users' real concerns.

 Thumbs Up for SAVINGS
Better driving standards mean fewer accidents and less insurance claims. Members will see the benefits with insurance discounts and reduced premiums.

 Thumbs Up for SIMPLICITY
How it works Vehicles in the scheme display the Well Driven? logo showing the 24 hour, 365 day a year, free phone number for members of the public to call. The Well Driven? call centre acknowledges all calls by letter, and faxes details to the appropriate company. Under the terms of the code operators must investigate and make full responses in writing to all callers within 21 days. Well Driven is managed by the FTA and is supported by the RHA and the CBI but is open to all companies large or small who care about high on-the-road standards.

 Thumbs Up for PERFORMANCE
Membership of the scheme motivates your team to give their best while allowing management to monitor driver and vehicle performance. Monthly bespoke company statistics enable companies to benchmark and improve their performance. The free phone number provides a simple one-track calls handling procedure for dealings with the public's comments. The system encourages road users to report their views, allowing praise to be passed on to drivers and boost their morale, while permitting you to deal effectively with negative remarks. And it is not just a complaints line - around one third of calls are positive. Joining the code starts from just £10 plus VAT. This includes:

  • Vehicle stickers
  • Calls handling
  • Monthly bespoke company statistics
  • Copies of the code
  • Driver cards
  • Caller survey

Signatories of the Code undertake to:

  • Plan operations to ensure legal, safety and environmental obligation are met
  • Monitor drivers' compliance with the Code
  • Train drivers beyond the legal minimum
  • Ensure vehicles are clean and well maintained
  • Respect other road users and pedestrians
  • Require contractors / sub-contractors to follow the Code
  • Respond in writing to complaints

Only companies meeting these standards can be in the scheme.

The Good Lorry Code and The Good Van Code

When you see lorries and vans on the road with this sign, it means their operators have signed up to a voluntary code which promotes high standards of driving, vehicle maintenance and consideration for other road users.

The freephone number is an invitation for you to have your say about driving standards or the condition of the vehicle. A help desk, manned around the clock, will take your call. To enable your comments to be passed to the vehicle operator we will need some way of identifying the truck or van- preferably the registration number and the name of the company on the vehicle, together with the time and place you saw it.

Often trucks from "household" name companies are operated by specialist distribution companies. If you have that company's name it will ease the tracking process. Don't worry if you can't get all this information; some of it might be enough.
