Training

Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser Training

EC Directive 96/35 requires companies involved in the transport, distribution and loading of dangerous goods consigned by road, rail or inland waterway to appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA).

The directive requires that DGSAs shall be qualified by having taken and passed an approved examination and that they shall have been issued with a Vocational Training Certificate (VTC) before taking up their duties.

The VTC is valid for five years. Many of those who are already qualified will need to take a revalidation DGSA training course during 2003 and 2004.

  • Standard one-week DGSA course - The examinations, which must be passed in order to obtain the VTC, are on a modular basis. Candidates must pass the core module, then one of either the road module, rail module or inland waterway transport. The final examination to pass is either; solids and liquids, minerial oils, class 1, class 2, class 7 or all classes. These courses are available on either a residential or non-residential basis at a number of venues around the country.
  • Revalidation DGSA course - FTA offers a three day revalidation course for those DGSAs who have frequently used their knowledge. For those who haven’t used their knowledge as often, then FTA recommends taking the full one week course again. If you are unsure which option is best for you, FTA offers a free pre-course assessment, where we recommend the most appropriate route for you.
  • Pre-course study day - To help prepare candidates who are to attend a standard week DGSA course, but who have no prior knowledge or experience of using dangerous goods regulatory texts.
  • DGSA revision days - Designed to assist candidates who have attended a standard course but who feel that they would benefit from further tuition and examination question practice prior to sitting the examinations. Also appropriate for candidates who have taken but failed one or more modules.

Driver Training

All drivers within scope of the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (Driver Training) Regulations 1996 must be trained and hold a Vocational Training Certificate issued by DVLA.

This is required by UK regulations implementing the relevant EU directive.

The Department for Transport approved training from FTA will ensure that both your company and your drivers meet this statutory requirement.

Compulsory refresher training must be completed within the five year expiry of the date of issue of the original certificate.

  • Initial training - A five day course for all those who are within scope of the carriage of dangerous goods by road regulations and need to obtain the Vocational Training Certificate issued by DVLA.
  • Refresher training - The Vocational Training Certificates issued by DVLA are only valid for five years. Before the expiry date of the certificate a three day refresher course must be taken. FTA recommends that drivers enrol at least 12 weeks prior to the expiry date.
  • In-company ADR training - FTA can also offer in-house training at premises, which meet the City & Guilds criteria for suitable examination centres. Similarly, facilities must be available for practical fire extinguisher exercises.
  • Dangerous goods for non-ADR drivers - A one day course for drivers of small vehicles, under 3.5 tonnes, who are responsible for loading and carrying dangerous goods. It will provide the drivers with sufficient knowledge of dangerous substances and a full understanding of the legislation that governs their handling and carriage.

Operative, supervisor and management training

The movement of dangerous goods is the most regulated field of transportation both domestically and internationally.

With a continuous stream of legislation, dangerous goods training is not only becoming more important but will also place increasing requirements on consignors and transporters of dangerous substances.

FTA has designed a comprehensive range of dangerous goods courses to help ensure companies become and stay compliant whilst maintaining and enhancing performance.

  • Introduction to dangerous goods transport - A one day course to provide delegates with a basic understanding of the terminology used and regulations that govern the safe transport of dangerous goods by road, rail, sea or air.
  • Dangerous goods by road and sea to Europe - A three day course to provide an understanding of the complex procedures involved in organising shipments of dangerous goods by road and sea to other parts of Europe and beyond.
  • Dangerous goods by air - A three day course approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to provide managerial staff involved in the shipment of dangerous goods by air with a thorough knowledge of both the ICAO Technical Instructions and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
  • Safe transport of dangerous goods in small packages - A one day course to ensure delegates identify and understand the regulations that govern the safe transport of dangerous goods in small packages by road, rail, sea or air.
  • Completing and checking dangerous goods transport documents - A one day course ensuring delegates can correctly complete all documents necessary for the safe and legal despatch of dangerous goods by road, sea, rail or air.
  • Safe loading of dangerous goods vehicles and containers - A one day course to provide compliance advice on the conditions for the safe loading of vehicles/containers. This is particularly relevant to sea journeys where rules are particularly strict.
  • Receiving deliveries of petroleum spirit and other flammable liquids - A one-day
