FTA seminars at Torquay waste show

For the second year running, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) is working with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) to run a Transport Hub at the CIWM 2008 Conference & Exhibition to be held in Torquay from 10-13 June.

A key attraction at last year’s show, the Transport Hub caters for those involved in waste handling and transport who have to juggle multiple priorities including improved efficiency, rising fuel costs, and carbon impact considerations, not to mention the ever present health and safety considerations.

FTA’s Sector Head for the Waste Sector and Public Authorities, Chris Ruane said, ‘For operators within both the private waste and municipal sectors, FTA appreciates just how turbulent the legislative waters have been, and will continue to be. Major issues of health and safety compliance, along with forthcoming driver training requirements, need to be given strategic consideration, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to address visitors at this year’s CIWM Show.

‘We cannot guarantee a heatwave in Torquay, but we can assure attendees to the Transport Hub that they will be given a warm welcome.’

FTA will deliver a series of tailored seminars for transport managers, supervisors and others responsible for the day-to-day operation of waste collection and haulage vehicles. The seminars will look at the key areas of transport safety and risk management, driver management and care, and reducing the environmental impact of waste transport, together with a look ahead to new legislative requirements. The programme includes:

• Managing risk for local authorities: Chris Ruane, FTA
  An overview of the corporate manslaughter and work-related road safety issues that apply across the diverse fleets of cars, vans and trucks operated by local authorities.

• Driver CPC: Sally Thornley, FTA
  An update on the new legislative requirements for driver training, which will be implemented for LGVs in September 2009 and for PCVs in September 2008.

• Managing risk for the private waste sector: Anne Johnson, FTA
  A summary of the corporate manslaughter legislation and the potential impact upon the private waste sector. The session will look at the critical elements of driver, truck and workplace and offer suggestions for best practice adoption.

• Reducing Carbon Emissions: Shaun Hamilton, Ecofar
  How using smaller satellite vehicles and ‘bulking up’ can cut fuel costs and reduce the carbon footprint of waste management operations.

• Safe Driving - Alcohol in the workplace: Simon Aldridge, Alcolock
  Reducing the risk of alcohol-related accidents.

• Vehicle Overloading: Julian Glasspole, VWS
  Reducing overloads: protecting the driver, the public, and your licence.
  

‘We had a lot of positive feedback about the Transport Hub last year and we are delighted that the FTA will be involved again this year,’ says CIWM Deputy Chief Executive Chris Murphy. Transport and logistics play an important role in delivering efficient, sustainable and cost effective waste management services and the free seminar programme being run by the FTA looks at key challenges facing both the public and private sector.’
