The Lex Transfleet Report on Freight Transport 2002
March 2002

Taxation, rising costs and network reliability top the list of concerns facing the freight transport sector according the Lex/FTA Report on Freight 2002. The Report presents the analysis of three quantitative surveys covering interviews with truck fleet managers, truck drivers and motorists. It provides a snapshot of how those in the freight transport sector and other road users view the industry and how well we are dealing with the problems that face us.

This years research underlines the unprecedented number of challenges that the UK logistics sector faces.

Concerns facing fleet managers

Some of these, such as cost control are primarily for the industry to solve through greater and greater control of supply chains. Legislation and taxation drive others. The need to improve the attractiveness of the industry to stem the exodus from driving as a profession presents a further challenge, requiring a long-term strategy covering training, pay, career structure and changes to working practices.

However, industry’s control over supply chains and the rewards of driving as a job are lost when vehicles are on the road network. At that point logistics efficiency and driver job satisfaction becomes dependent on government promises and action. The report is therefore also a call for action by Government to ensure that its promises are delivered on time, so industry can get on with its job of delivering the goods on which we all rely on.
