Tyneside Area Multi-Modal Study

Background

The study considered congestion and road safety on the trunk road network including the A1, A19, A184 and the A194(M) in Tyneside, having particular regard to the problems of congestion on the A1(T) Gateshead Western Bypass, and existing congestion and proposed dualling of the Tyne Tunnel. The study area covered the metropolitan area of Tyneside from south east Northumberland in the north, Sunderland, Hartlepool and Teeside in the south east, Durham and Darlington in the south and the Tyne Valley towards Hexham in the west.

Recommendations

The consultants have recommended widening the A1 Western Bypass, constructing grade separated junctions on the A19 and a new Tyne Crossing in addition to rail and public transport improvements. There are proposals to introduce cross-river tolls on all of the river crossings, and parking charges at the Metro Centre as a means of managing traffic growth.

Importance to Industry

Congestion in and around Tyneside is putting pressure on local economic activity, which in recent years has moved away from urban centres to dispersed industrial locations and business parks. The chemical and metal manufacturing industries remain sound, whilst other traditional industries of shipbuilding and mining have declined. The region's location at the periphery of mainland UK makes good inter-regional and international transport links essential for the well being of businesses.
