South East Manchester Multi-modal Study

Background

The South East Manchester Multi Modal Study was one of the first studies to report and to have the recommendations accepted by the Secretary of State. The study was asked to look at all forms of transport in SE Manchester and to draw up proposals to alleviate congestion in the study area. In essence, the study was looking at transport corridors away from the motorway and trunk road network in and around Stockport and Cheshire.

Recommendations

  • Alderley Edge Bypass
  • A6 Bypass
  • Poynton Bypass
  • A555 MALRW (Manchester Airport Link Road West)
  • M60/M67/A57 Denton Interchange
  • Traffic Management
  • FQP routeing & signing strategy

Update - February 2003

It is the responsibility of the local highway authorities to deliver the major schemes and funding has been made available by the Secretary of State. Local authorities are now in the process of drawing up detailed designs for the routes in question. Once the proposed routes have been agreed, the necessary statutory procedures will have to be undertaken (i.e. public consultation, public inquiry) before construction can commence.
