A453 Nottingham to M1 Junction 24

Background

The study looked at the issues of congestion and safety problems on the A453 between Nottingham and junction 24 of the M1.

Recommendations

The consultants have recommended construction of a dual carriageway on the A453 between Clifton and Nottingham; widening to four lanes through Clifton with junction improvements; traffic control and pedestrian facilities plus improvements to junction 24 (M1) with the A50 flyover to M1 (south). Passenger transport and rail improvements are also recommended including improved rail services between Derby and Nottingham and bus services both in Clifton and between Kegworth and Nottingham. There are also recommendations relating to workplace parking (or an equivalent charging scheme), parking controls and/or charges and reduced public transport fares.

Importance to Industry

For many years industry has been demanding the establishment of a dual carriageway from junction 24 of the M1 to the Nottingham Ring Road along the A453 corridor in order to create a better gateway to Nottingham. Improvement along this strategic route is a major priority and the severe delays for goods vehicles and other traffic movements on the route create a poor image for the City of Nottingham and are a major handicap for industry and the local economy.
