Norwich to Peterborough Multi-Modal Study

Background

The study developed options and recommendations over a thirty year period to meet freight and passenger needs within the Norwich to Peterborough transport corridor. The aim of the study was to outline problems and issues that are currently present within the area and address them over the next thirty years.

The study mainly focused on the A47 which is the major road between Norwich and Peterborough.

Recommendations

The consultants have recommended a series of measures to help resolve the transport problems in the area. The major road recommendations that will come out of the study are:

Wansford-Sutton Dualling
Eye Bypass to West of Thorney Dualling
Wisbech Bypass Dualling
Middleton-East Winch Local bypasses and improvements
Swaffham-Dereham Local improvements
North Toddenham-Easton Dualling

Proposals also include public transport measures such as upgrading rail stations, the upgrade of the Excel coach service, local bus service improvements and town centre interchanges.

Importance to Industry

The improvements to the A47 will benefit industry by reducing congestion bottlenecks and journey times. As the area is predominantly rural in nature the improvements will also ease the problems caused by seasonal agricultural produce movements.

Transport infrastructure announcement 9 July 2003 - industry views

The study recommended considerable improvements to the A47, much of which would have had involved dualling. We are concerned to note that further development work will only be commissioned on smallscale safety measures and bypasses. The case for upgrades between the A1 and East Anglian market towns is to be reviewed later.

The A47, whilst a regional trade route, is beset with serious congestion as a result of seasonal agricultural movements, which the Secretary of State's announcement has not addressed.
