A1 North of Newcastle Multi-Modal Study

Background

The study looked at the issues of safety and efficiency on the A1, the possibility for modal shift to more sustainable forms of transport, and at the prospects of economic growth associated with transport.

The study covered an area extending approximately five miles to the West of the A1 and Eastwards to the coast, from the junction of the A1 and A19 at Seaton Burn, Northwards to the border with Scotland.

Recommendations

The consultants have recommended upgrading the A1 between Morpeth and Felton to dual carriageway. Also, improving the B1341/B1342 junctions and dualling between Adderstone and Belford, improving the C16/C17 junctions and dualling West Mains to Bridge Mill by Haggerston. A number of local safety schemes are also proposed, including ones on the Morpeth bypass, the C106 Northern junction, Newton on the Moor, the A6105 Duns Road junction and improved traffic management and signing.

Passenger transport and rail improvements are also recommended, including hourly rail services from Newcastle to Berwick and Alnmouth, as well as Alnmouth to Berwick or Alnwick

Importance to Industry

The A1 is a strategic route of local, regional, national and international significance. It is a particularly importance route for Northern businesses, providing access to their markets in the region and acting as the key link to markets in Scotland and to the South.

The current single carriageway route suffers a high accident rate and slow journey times. The improvements proposed will benefit businesses, the economy and the environment. During 2002, goods vehicles used this route for some 5.3 million journeys, moving 50 million tonnes of freight.
