Hull East-West Corridor Multi-Modal Study

Background

The study looked at congestion on the A63/A1033 through Kingston-upon-Hull, considering a range of alternative options for tackling the transport problems on this transport corridor. The aim was to develop a sustainable and integrated long term transport strategy by making better use of alternative modes of transport whilst still facilitating economic growth and regeneration in the area. The study covered the corridor of the A63/A1033 from the start of the M62 to Hedon, with particular focus on Castle Street in Hull. The area of analysis extended north and south of the corridor to include all east-west rail and water links.

Recommendations

The consultants recommended strategy includes on-line improvements to Castle Street, replacing local access roads with a parallel side road, a new grade separated junction at Mytongate and improved junction at Market Place. In addition, improved rail freight connections to the port, (including track signalling), a new rail station and park and ride sites linked to four guided bus routes with short term traffic management measures.

Importance to Industry

The A63/A1033 is the strategic route to the city centre and Port of Hull. It is used by local, regional, national and international freight traffic and is part of the E20 Trans European Corridor. Current peak hour congestion affects both local traffic delivering into the city centre and surrounding area and long distance traffic accessing the port. Varying and unreliable journey times along the corridor increase the cost burden of business and puts considerable pressure on drivers and vehicles seeking to meet ferry arrivals and departures.
