Cambridge to Huntingdon Multi-Modal Study (CHUMMS)

Background

The study area covered the Cambridge to Huntingdon corridor and had three main components. A core area broadly centred on the A14, an inner area surrounding the core area reflecting the A14's sphere of influence and a further outer study area beyond that.

Recommendations

The study recommended junction and road improvements, including parallel roads between the M11 and east of Fenstanton. It also proposed widening and partial realignment of the A14 to form a dual 3-lane carriageway including a southern bypass for Huntingdon. For public transport it proposed a guided bus system using the former Cambridge - St Ives rail corridor and complementary measures to encourage public transport, cycling and walking.

Importance to Industry

The transport problems in the Cambridge to Huntingdon corridor stem from the multiple functions of the congested A14. It is a key link for north-south and east-west through traffic and carries a high proportion of heavy goods vehicles. It is also heavily used by commuters. Freight is affected by the resultant unreliable journey times. The Secretary of State supported the study’s findings as endorsed by the regional planning body. The outlined package of measures should ease the pressure on the route and increase journey time reliability.
