Vehicle telematics are forming an increasingly important part of the way truck operations are controlled, taxed and enforced. Yet the telematic systems serving each of these functions are being developed in a piecemeal way, utilising systems which are technically incompatible. FTA believes that the development of this technology has reached a unique point when the so-far unconnected elements to vehicle telematics can be brought together into a single, integrated system.

A single black box would serve five core functions:

This campaign has two objectives:

  • To provide manufacturers with technical specifications to produce an interated black box, incorporating the digital tachograph, road user charging system, on board management systems, fleet and network performance information
  • To persuade the EC to rethink the timetable for the introduction of digital tachographs and on board charging and management equipment
